Plasmon Empowered Nano-Optical Millimeter-Wave to Terahertz Generation in Semiconductors
The aim of the international collaboration between Universität Duisburg-Essen and University of Ottawa is to exploit electric field enhancements in metallic optical (plasmonic) nano-sized antenna structures for efficient millimeter-wave to terahertz signal generation.
It is known that the electric field in the gap region of a nano-photonic antenna can be up to 40 times higher than the incident field. The key idea of this research project is to exploit those field enhancements in nano-plasmonic antennas for efficient THz generation by difference frequency generation or optical heterodyning in nano-sized antenna-integrated photomixers or optically nonlinear crystals.
